my love/hate relationship with food trucks.

a few years ago, i began a love affair with a food truck called kogi. it was new. it was unique. it was different. at least different from the typical taco trucks that i see every day around LA. several months later, new trucks came into the scene offering up nearly all the mash-ups that you can think of when you say “fusion cuisine.” there were good and interesting trucks offering delicious food for a reasonable price, but most were just sad iterations of a once cool idea but has since become totally mainstream and mediocre. and here we are, a good two years after my first bite at kogi, and there are food trucks for just about anything. the novelty of the whole food truck scene trickled away as i saw my twitter feed become a mess of locations and daily specials.

have you been to the downtown LA artwalk lately? when i first started going, there were a few food trucks to satisfy your hunger while you walked through rows of galleries, street performers, and craft vendors. last night? there were at least four lots filled with just trucks. most of which you will never eat at if you knew 10 other trucks offered the same food. it was a crowded mess! as much as i love the trucks, i just feel like it has gone out of control. artwalk used to be about art, but now it seems it’s all about the trucks. don’t get me wrong, some of my favorites were there, but do we really need 10 trucks that offered korean-mexican fusion tacos?

i read an article from the la times last week that talked specifically about the issue with food trucks and i agree wholeheartedly with what chef roy of kogi said. he said the trucks need to go out into the neighborhoods and stop congregating in the same lots. jason kessler of bon appetit magazine is fed up as well, and is looking for suggestions for a system to keep the food trucks under control or at least how to keep the good ones, and get rid of the bad ones. i can’t think of anything, other than the fact that people will stop eating at trucks that don’t have good food. right? but then 10 others will pop up soon after than one truck goes out of business. meh. i don’t know anymore.

good thing there are still some trucks who are dedicated to good food and the whole culture of why food trucks are great. aside from kogi, some of my favorites are the flying pig, lake st creamery, and my newly discovered competition for the über popular grilled cheese truck, @rebelbite.

i hope that sooner, rather than later, the whole food truck scene would just settle down, and all the new “fad” trucks would learn from the mexican loncheras that have been around for years. these trucks are as good now as they were several years ago. no hype. no fancy signs. just good, convenient food.
